Production Log 1A: Photography Planning

For my magazine cover, I focused on creating visually engaging and seasonally relevant concepts that would appeal to a 16-25year old target audience. Each cover design was developed with careful consideration of mise-en-scène and colour symbolism to reflect the themes of each month. The January edition explores ideas of renewal and winter fashion, while the February edition shifts toward warmth, love and the early signs of spring. Through costume choices, lighting and setting, my aim was to produce cohesive and aesthetically strong covers that communicate the magazine’s youthful, contemporary identity. I aim to take these photos in the month of late October/mid November at the latest to allow my setting to be more wintery than autumnal and to allow my models time to be free so I can take my photography.

For the January edition, my planning focused on conveying themes of new beginnings and winter fashion through mise-en-scène and costume. The chosen visual codes such as jackets and scarfs to communicate warmth, renewal and a clean seasonal aesthetic associated with the new year. The use outdoor settings allows natural light (to create realism and relatability). I aim for a representation of male and female models to appeal to a selected audience, using props like a caps to anchor the styling in everyday youth culture. The composition and camera framing, which ranges from close-ups to walking shots, support a dynamic, lifestyle-oriented narrative that aligns with contemporary fashion magazine conventions.

For the February cover, the concept revolves around love, warmth and the transition into spring, reflected through the use of semiotic colour codes like intimate lighting to connote passion and calm energy. The costume design: a black tie (appropriate wear to an event), appealing to a youthful demographic that values individuality and self-expression. I wish to have my photographs taken at a house or a nice indoor location to establish an intimate, authentic, getting ready atmosphere that supports the theme of connection, using warm ambient lighting to evoke cosiness and approachability. The overall composition is designed to feel candid and inviting, mirroring the audiences preference for authenticity over perfection while maintaining the polished aesthetic expected of a fashion publication.
