Research Task 3: Conde Nast Style Magazines

Condé Nast own publications globally including iconic UK brands such as:

Tatler

Tatler focuses on fashion and lifestyle, as well as coverage of politics. It is targeted towards the British upper and upper-middle classes, and people interested in relevant society events. Tatler is one of the world’s oldest magazines, known for its focus on British high society, fashion, and lifestyle. It was first founded in 1709 by Richard Steele as a political magazine. In 1901, the magazine was revived as a society and lifestyle publication, shifting its focus to the British upper class and luxury living, best known for covering the social elite of royals and celebrities. Condé Nast brought Tatler in 1982 maintaining it’s journalism on the social elites.

British GQ

British GQ is a monthly men's magazine. The publication focuses on fashion, style, and culture for aimed at the audience of men. British GQ is the UK edition of GQ (also known as Gentlemen’s Quarterly), a men’s lifestyle and fashion magazine. It was launched in 1988 by Condé Nast, following the success of American GQ, as originally founded in the U.S. In 1931 it rebranded as Gentlemen’s Quarterly in 1958 and became simply GQ in 1983, expanding more into a lifestyle, politics, and culture magazine for men. Since its UK launch, it’s known for a mix of high-end fashion, celebrity interviews and politics. Today it focuses on digital content and events like the GQ Men of the Year Awards where female celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Emma Watson are featured as front covers.

British Vogue

Vogue UK is a monthly magazine, providing the reader with high street fashion advice and trends. British Vogue is the British edition of Vogue, one of the world’s most influential fashion magazines. It was first published in 1916 during World War I when shipments of the American Vogue were disrupted. The magazine was launched by Condé Nast who still own British Vogue now. Over the decades, British Vogue has evolved from a high-society publication into a major magazine on fashion, beauty, culture, and lifestyle. It has played a key role in showcasing British designers and photographers, launching the careers of figures like Kate Moss. Today Vogue reshapes fashion by using models with disabilities to ‘Reframe fashion’ as seen on the 2023 copy.

Vanity Fair


Vanity Fair features stunning and controversial photography, publishing features on celebrities, fashion and current affairs, offering news and interviews from celebrities but also featuring other topics of interest such as politics. Vanity Fair is a renowned magazine known for its coverage of fashion, culture, politics, and celebrity gossip. The original Vanity Fair was launched in the U.S. in 1913 by Condé Nast, focusing on culture, fashion, and society. It became a leading publication but struggled financially and was merged with Vogue in 1936. In 1983, Condé Nast revived Vanity Fair with a new focus on celebrity profiles and political reporting and is still know for its celebrity gossip now continuing as a leading publication but also expanding onto the digital media.
